Medigap Policy

A Medigap policy is usually the health insurance policy that is sold by the private insurance companies. This is done in order to fill up the gaps in the Original Medicare Plan cover. The Medigap policy helps to meet some expenses towards the health care and this is not done by Original Medicare policy. If someone has an Original Medicare Plan and also have a Medigap policy, then almost all of the healthcare costs will be covered by both of them in their own respective shares.

The insurance companies try to sell their product in the form of standardized Medigap policy. One needs to compare them thoroughly in order to know its uses in detail as they may vary in costs. A customer can choose a maximum of 12 different types of standardized Medigap policies. These range from Medigap plans A to L. The medigap policy must obey the Federal and the State laws. The protection is done by these laws. The medigap policy should necessarily be identified on cover as ‘Medicare Supplement Insurance’. The benefits vary through the plans from A to L. All insurance companies offer the same Medigap policy starting from A to L with the same set of benefits. The decision of which Medigap policy is to be sold depends solely on the specific insurance company.

Usually when a Medigap insurance policy is purchased, it is a must to have a Medicare part A and B. The month premium of Medicare part B has to be compulsorily paid. Also, in addition to this, Medigap insurance premium should also be paid. The Medigap policy will cover the health care cost of the policy holder alone and not cover the spouse’s costs also.

Generally the health insurance is the insurance that covers the medical expenses of the policy holder. It should be offered by any social insurance program that is government- sponsored. It could be purchased in two ways- for a group of consumers or for individual consumer. The purchase for the group consumers is like purchase done by the firm to cover the medical expense of the employees. Whatever be the case, the premiums should be paid promptly so as to get the coverage for the unexpected medical expenses. In most of the cases it is seen that the group health insurance is more preferred than the individual health insurance. This is because of the fact that the group health insurance is comparatively cheap by its cots and offers plenty of benefits.
